A car lockout usually happens in a hurry: groceries in one hand, the door swings shut, and the fob is sitting in the cupholder. Auto Lyft USA dispatches a truck out of the Harrisburg Pike lot (US-62) to open the vehicle so you can get your keys back and get moving. We work every day of the year, around the clock, across Columbus and the surrounding suburbs.
The technique is simple and careful. A soft air wedge goes into the top corner of the door frame and is pumped up just enough to make a narrow gap. A coated long-reach tool slides through that gap to press the unlock button or lift the handle from inside. Nothing is forced, nothing is drilled, and the window stays in one piece. Most modern doors, including ones with frameless glass, respond to this method.
Before we open anything, expect a quick check that the car belongs to you or that you are allowed to drive it. A driver's license that matches the registration or insurance card in the glovebox is usually enough. That step protects you as much as anyone. One thing we don't do is make keys: we don't cut blades or program fobs, so if the key is lost rather than locked inside, the dispatcher will explain your options, including a tow to a dealer. Call (614) 633-8163 and tell us where you are parked.
When to call
Situations where car lockout service is the right call
Keys on the seat or in the ignition
The classic case. The fob is visible through the glass and every door is locked. We reach in, pop the lock and hand the keys back to you.
Keys in the trunk
Many sedans have a trunk release inside the cabin. Once a door is open, that button or the fob itself usually gets the trunk lid up.
Child or pet inside
If a child or animal is in a hot or cold car, call 911 first. Then call us, and tell the dispatcher so your call goes to the front of the line.
Engine left running
Push-button cars sometimes lock with the motor on and the fob inside. We open the door the same way and you can shut it off.
Dead fob battery
A fob with a weak cell may not unlock the doors at all. We get you inside so you can use the hidden mechanical blade or start the car with the fob held to the button.
Locked out before a tow
If your car also needs to go to a shop, we open it first so the driver can shift to neutral and load it. Both jobs can be booked in one call.

How our drivers handle it
Confirm ownership
The driver looks at your ID and, once inside, the registration. If paperwork is locked in the car, we confirm it as soon as the door opens.
Protect the finish
A plastic shim or cloth guards the paint where the wedge sits, so the door edge and frame aren't marked.
Wedge and reach
The air bag opens a small gap and a long-reach rod works the inside lock or handle. Frameless windows get extra care at the seal.
Check the locks
With the door open, we make sure the locks still cycle normally and the window seats fully in its channel before we leave.
Where Columbus drivers get locked out
Lockout calls cluster around places people park, step out for a minute and come back in a rush. Grocery and big-box lots on Georgesville Road and along Hilliard-Rome Road, gas stations off I-71 near Grove City, the garages around the Short North, and stadium lots on campus game days all show up on our call sheet. Parking ramps are fine for us; a lockout needs no deck clearance, just room to stand beside the door.
We also open cars in apartment lots in Hilliard, Grove City and Westerville, and at trailheads and park lots where the keys went into a gym bag that ended up in the back seat.
What to have ready when the driver arrives
A few small things keep the visit short. While you wait, stay somewhere safe and visible, especially on a highway shoulder or in a dark lot. If you are on I-270 or I-70, step away from traffic and behind the guardrail if there is one; the car is not going anywhere. If the vehicle is running with the keys inside, leave it be and don't try a coat hanger on the window seal, which tends to tear the weatherstripping and can snag the wiring in the door.
- A photo ID in your own name. If your wallet is locked in the car, tell the dispatcher; the driver will check papers once the door is open.
- The exact spot: lot section, garage level or the nearest cross street.
- The year, make and model, and whether the windows are frameless.
- Whether a spare key exists somewhere nearby. Sometimes a family member with a spare is quicker, and we will tell you so.
Car Lockout Service: questions and answers
How does your car lockout service work?
A driver places a soft inflatable wedge at the top edge of the door, pumps it until there is a slim opening, and uses a coated long-reach rod to press the unlock switch or pull the inside handle. No glass is broken and the lock cylinder is never drilled. Once the door is open you grab your keys and we check that the locks work normally.
Will opening the door damage my car?
Non-destructive entry is the whole point of the method. The wedge is soft, the rod is coated, and we pad the paint where the tools touch. On cars with frameless glass we watch the window closely so it does not lift out of the seal. If we think a particular door carries a risk, the driver explains it before starting.
How much does a car lockout cost in Columbus?
The price depends on where you are, the time of day and the vehicle. The dispatcher gives you the full amount on the phone before anyone is sent, so there is no surprise when the door opens. Our rates page lays out how roadside calls are priced.
How long until someone gets to me?
It depends on how far you are from the nearest available driver and what traffic looks like at that hour. The dispatcher looks at both when you call and gives you a live estimate, then calls back if anything changes on the way.
Do I need to prove the car is mine?
Yes, we may ask. A license that matches the name on the registration or insurance card is the normal check. If those papers are inside the car, we confirm them once the door is open. If the vehicle belongs to a relative or an employer, tell the dispatcher so we know what to expect.
Can you make a new key or program a fob?
No. Auto Lyft USA does not cut keys or program fobs. A key that is truly gone calls for a locksmith or a dealership parts counter instead. We can tow the car to the dealership so their service department can make a key on site.
My child is locked in the car. What should I do?
Call 911 first, especially in summer heat or winter cold. Emergency crews can respond faster than any private company. After that, call us and mention the child or animal in the car; the dispatcher will move that call ahead of routine work.
Can you open a car with keyless entry or push-button start?
Yes. The door hardware on these cars still has an inside lock switch and a handle, which is what our tools reach. Once inside, you can retrieve the fob. If the fob battery is dead, most models hide a mechanical key in the fob and a spot on the steering column or console to start the car.
Do you open trucks, vans and SUVs?
Yes. Pickups, minivans, cargo vans and SUVs all open with the same wedge-and-reach method. Taller doors sometimes need a longer rod, which our drivers carry. Commercial vans with bulkheads or extra security locks can take longer, so mention them when you call.
The fob is in the trunk, not the cabin. Can you still help?
We open a door first. Most cars have a trunk release on the dash, the driver's door or the fob, and that pops the lid. Some sedans with fold-down rear seats let you reach the trunk from the cabin. A few models lock the trunk separately, and the driver will look at it with you.
Do you handle lockouts at night or on holidays?
Yes. Someone picks up the dispatch line at any hour, 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. Some late-night and holiday calls cost more, and the dispatcher folds that into the quote before a driver heads out. Nights are also when we see the most lockouts outside bars, restaurants and late shifts.
Can you help if I'm locked out and the battery is dead too?
Yes. Once the door is open, the driver can boost the battery on the same visit. Mention both problems on the phone so the quote covers the boost as well as the door, and so the driver brings a charged booster pack. More on that is on the jump start page.
