When a car slides off the road and the tires just spin, what it needs is a winch out: a controlled pull from a truck anchored on solid ground. Every one of the four flatbed carriers at Auto Lyft USA has a winch mounted behind the cab, and our drivers use it to recover sedans, crossovers, minivans and light pickups from ditches, snowbanks, mud and soggy lawns around Columbus. We dispatch from 1620 Harrisburg Pike at any hour, which matters, because most of these calls come at night or during a storm.

Pulling a car out is not the same as dragging it. The driver looks at how the vehicle is sitting, where the tires have traction and what's underneath it before hooking anything up. The cable attaches to a tow point or frame, never a plastic bumper cover, and the pull goes slow enough that the car rolls rather than plows. If the car can be driven afterward, you go on your way. If something broke on the way into the ditch, the same truck can load it and haul it to a shop.

Not every stuck vehicle is a light-duty job. A car deep in a creek, a truck far down an embankment or an off-road rig in a field may need a heavier wrecker or a rotator, and we'll arrange a partner for those and tell you so on the first call. Ring (614) 633-8163, describe where the car is and how it's sitting, and you'll get a price for the full job before a driver heads your way.

When to call

Situations where winch-out & ditch recovery is the right call

  • Slid off on ice or snow

The first real snow of the year sends cars into the median and the ditch along I-71 north toward Delaware, I-270 in Dublin and US-33 toward Marysville.

  • Rural roadside ditch

Narrow country roads in Madison, Pickaway and Licking counties have steep drainage ditches right at the edge of the pavement. One wheel off and the car is in.

  • Stuck in a soft yard

A car parked on the lawn for a party or a move sinks into wet ground overnight. Spring thaw makes this a weekly call.

  • Mud at a job site or field

Contractors' pickups and visitors' cars bog down on unpaved lots at new subdivisions. We pull them back to gravel or pavement.

  • Hung up on a curb or median

A car that jumped a curb or parking block and is resting on its frame needs a lift-and-pull, not more gas.

  • Over the edge of a driveway

Steep driveways and turnarounds in hilly Delaware and Licking County neighborhoods catch a tire and leave the car tipped. A side pull straightens it out.

On scene

How our drivers handle it

  1. Read the scene

The driver checks the ground, the slope, and what the car is resting on. If the vehicle is in water or down a steep bank, this is where a partner gets called.

  2. Anchor the truck

The carrier is set on firm footing with its brakes locked. If the pull angle is awkward, a snatch block redirects the cable so the force comes from the right direction.

  3. Hook to a strong point

Cable or strap goes to a factory recovery eye, a frame point or the axle, never to a bumper cover, tie rod or plastic panel.

  4. Slow, steady pull

With someone steering, the car is drawn back to level ground. The driver then checks the tires, underside and steering before you drive away.

Winter in Central Ohio means ditch calls

A few inches of wet snow on a cold morning is enough to send dozens of cars off the road across Franklin County. The trouble spots are predictable: the I-71 corridor north toward Delaware, where open fields let wind drift snow across the lanes; I-270 ramps in Dublin and Worthington; and US-23 and SR-104 south of the city. Two-lane roads in rural Madison and Pickaway counties are worse because the ditches are deep and come right up to the white line.

During a bad storm, police may close a stretch of road or ask tow trucks to hold off until plows have passed. When that happens, the dispatcher tells you and keeps your call in line. If you are safe and warm in the car, stay put, dig snow away from the exhaust pipe, and limit engine time to brief warm-up periods.

When a winch-out isn't enough

Our trucks are light-duty carriers, which covers almost every car, crossover, minivan and half-ton pickup. A few situations call for more:

  • A vehicle in deep water or a flooded creek bed.
  • A car rolled onto its side or roof.
  • A pickup with a heavy trailer still attached.
  • Off-road recoveries far from any road, where our truck can't reach solid ground near the car.
  • Box trucks and vans over light-duty weight; see medium-duty towing.

Winch-Out & Ditch Recovery: questions and answers

What is a winch out?

It's a recovery where a truck parked on solid ground uses a powered cable to pull a stuck vehicle back to where its tires can grip. We use it for cars in ditches, snowbanks, mud and soft yards. Once the car is out, it can usually be driven away; if not, we load it on the flatbed.

How much does a winch-out cost in Columbus?

Price depends on how the car is sitting, how far it has to come out, where it is and the hour. A car just past the edge of the road is a different job from one deep in a ravine. The dispatcher asks enough questions to quote the whole job before a truck goes out; see our rates page.

How fast can you reach me in a snowstorm?

Storm calls depend on distance, road conditions and how many cars are already off the road. The dispatcher gives you a live estimate and keeps you posted as it changes. If you are in danger or blocking traffic, call 911 first so the highway patrol can protect the scene.

Will winching damage my car?

The goal is to bring the car out without adding damage. We hook to recovery eyes or frame points, pull slowly and keep the wheels pointed where the car needs to go. A car that hit something on the way in may already have damage, and the driver will point out anything visible before the pull.

Can you pull my car out of my own yard?

Yes. A car sunk in a wet lawn is one of the most common jobs we do in spring. The truck stays on the driveway or the street and the cable reaches across the grass. We try to keep ruts to a minimum, though a car that's already sunk usually leaves some.

Do you need my keys for a winch-out?

Yes, ideally. Someone needs to steer and release the parking brake while the car comes out, and the steering must be unlocked. If the keys are locked inside, we can open the car first with our car lockout service, then start the pull once the wheel turns freely and the shifter moves.

My car is in a ditch but not damaged. Should I keep trying to drive out?

Usually no. Spinning the tires digs them deeper, polishes snow into ice and can overheat the transmission. Rocking a car back and forth can also slide it farther down the slope. Turn off the engine if the exhaust might be blocked, put the hazards on and call.

Can you recover a pickup truck or SUV?

Yes, as long as it falls within light-duty weight. Half-ton pickups, full-size SUVs and minivans are routine. A heavy-duty pickup towing a loaded trailer may need a bigger truck, and the dispatcher will tell you on the first call if we need to bring in a partner.

Do you handle off-road or water recoveries?

Some, depending on access. If our truck can sit on firm ground within cable reach, we can usually do it. Deep water, steep embankments and vehicles far off any road may need a heavier wrecker. We arrange that with a partner and tell you up front.

Can you tow the car after pulling it out?

Yes. Every truck we run is a flatbed, so if a tire is torn, the steering is bent or the car won't start, it goes up on the deck right there and rides to your shop, a dealer, your home or our lot. Our flatbed towing page explains how loading works.

Is a winch-out covered by insurance?

Many auto policies and roadside plans include winching. Check your policy or call your insurer. We can give you an itemized receipt that shows the work and time, which most companies need for reimbursement. If your insurer sends a different company, that's your choice to make.

I am off the road and waiting for the winch-out. Any tips?

Stay in the car with your seatbelt on if it's safe and out of traffic. Turn on the hazards. In snow, make sure the tailpipe isn't buried before running the engine for heat. If the car is tilted badly or near water, get out on the uphill side and wait away from the road.

Can you pull out a car that is stuck on a frozen pond edge or boat ramp?

Sometimes. Boat ramps at Alum Creek and Hoover Reservoir are paved down to the waterline, so a truck can sit at the top and pull straight back. Ice and open water change the picture fast: if any wheel is through the ice or the car is floating, we bring in a partner with heavier gear. Never walk onto the ice to reach the car.
