Long-Distance Towing to and from Columbus, One Car per Truck

When a vehicle has to travel a hundred miles or more, it goes alone on one of our flatbeds, picked up at one address and unloaded at the other by the same driver.

  • Open 24/7, 365 days
  • Flatbed-only fleet
  • Price quoted before dispatch
  • Licensed & insured

Long-distance towing covers the trips that go well past the outerbelt: a car that broke down on a road trip and needs to come home to Columbus, a used SUV bought from a seller in Toledo, a student's hatchback headed back from Athens for the summer, or a vehicle moving with its owner to Indianapolis or Pittsburgh. Auto Lyft USA runs these from our Harrisburg Pike yard to destinations across Ohio and into the neighboring states.

Unlike a car-hauler that collects eight or nine vehicles along a route and drops them off over several days, our trucks carry a single vehicle and drive straight between the two addresses. That means a set pickup time, no stops at a terminal, no transfers between trucks, and one driver responsible for your car the entire way. Because every truck is a flatbed, the odometer doesn't move and the tires, transmission and suspension take no wear from the trip.

Price for a long tow is based mostly on loaded miles, plus the drive out to reach the car and any tolls. Call (614) 633-8163 or use the estimate page with both addresses and the vehicle details, and you will have the full figure before you book. The dispatcher will also tell you a realistic pickup window and roughly how long the drive should take, so you can plan who will be waiting at the other end.

When to call

Situations where long-distance towing is the right call

  • Breakdown far from home

Your car quit near Mansfield or outside Cincinnati and you would rather have your own mechanic in Columbus fix it. We bring it back to the shop you trust.

  • Buying a car out of town

Online auctions and private sales often mean a vehicle in Dayton, Akron or Lexington. We pick it up from the seller and deliver it to your driveway.

  • Moving to a new city

If you are driving a moving truck and can't also drive your second car, it can follow on a flatbed to your new address.

  • College move-in and move-out

Students at Ohio University, Miami, Kent State or Ohio State sometimes need a car moved between campus and home without anyone making the drive twice.

  • Project and classic cars

A car that doesn't run, or one you don't want to put miles on, rides the whole distance on the deck instead of being driven or dragged.

  • Specialist repairs

Some repairs go to one particular shop, such as an EV service center or a transmission builder two hours away. We deliver directly to that bay door.

On scene

How our drivers handle it

  1. Quote with both addresses

Give the pickup and delivery addresses, the vehicle, whether it runs and the day you need it moved. The price you hear includes the whole trip.

  2. Book a pickup window

We set a time with whoever will hand over the car and confirm who will be at the other end to receive it.

  3. Condition photos at both ends

The driver photographs the vehicle before loading and again at delivery, so both sides can see it arrived as it left.

  4. Direct drive to the destination

The car stays strapped on the deck with no stops at a terminal and no transfer to another truck along the way.

Where we go from Columbus

Most long trips start or end in Central Ohio and run along the main interstates: I-70 west to Dayton and Indianapolis or east toward Zanesville and Wheeling, I-71 south to Cincinnati and Louisville or north to Mansfield and Cleveland, and US-23 north to Toledo and Michigan. US-33 handles a lot of trips to Athens and southeast Ohio.

We run to every corner of Ohio and into Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Longer runs past the neighboring states are possible; ask, and the dispatcher will say whether we can do it and what it will cost.

  • Within Ohio: Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, Athens, Zanesville, Mansfield
  • Neighboring states: Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Detroit, Fort Wayne
  • Pickups from those places back to Columbus and its suburbs

Getting a car ready for a long tow

A little preparation keeps the handoff quick at both ends and avoids surprises halfway down I-71.

  • Take out personal items and anything loose in the cabin; we can't be responsible for belongings left inside.
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel or some charge so the car can be driven on and off the deck if it runs.
  • Fold in mirrors and remove a roof box or bike rack if you can.
  • Arrange for someone with the key to be at pickup, and someone to accept the car at delivery.
  • If the car is electric, find out how to put it in transport mode before the driver arrives.

Long-Distance Towing: questions and answers

How much does long distance towing cost?

The biggest factor is the number of loaded miles between the two addresses, plus the distance our truck drives to reach the car and any highway tolls. The vehicle's size and whether it runs can also matter. The dispatcher quotes the full trip before you book; the rates page explains the parts of a long-distance price.

How far will you tow a car?

We run anywhere in Ohio and also cross into Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Trips farther than that are handled case by case depending on how long a truck and driver would be away from Columbus. Ask the dispatcher about your exact route and they will tell you whether it fits our schedule.

How long will the trip take?

It depends on the mileage, the route and what traffic and weather are doing that day. A run to Cincinnati is a different day than one to Detroit. When you book, the dispatcher gives you an expected pickup window and a rough estimate of the drive, and the driver can update you while on the road.

Will my car be on a truck with other vehicles?

No. Each of our flatbeds carries one vehicle at a time, and the truck goes directly from pickup to delivery. That is different from multi-car carriers that load several vehicles and drop them off over a few days. Your car is not moved to another truck or left at a depot along the way.

Can you pick up a car I bought from a private seller?

Yes. We coordinate a pickup time with the seller and you, and the driver photographs the car before loading. Make sure the seller knows we are coming, that the title and keys are handed over as you have agreed, and that the car is accessible at the address you give us.

Do I need to be there at pickup and delivery?

Someone needs to be at each end, but it doesn't have to be you. A seller, a friend, a dealership employee or a shop can release the car or receive it. Give the dispatcher their names and phone numbers so the driver can reach them before arriving.

Can I ride with my car on a long trip?

Sometimes. One adult passenger may be able to ride in the cab if there is room and it is arranged ahead of time. On very long runs it is often easier to travel separately. Raise it while booking and the dispatcher will tell you whether it can work for your trip.

Can you tow a car that doesn't run for a long distance?

Yes. The winch pulls a non-running car onto the deck, and it rides the whole way strapped at the tires. Tell us whether it rolls, steers and brakes so the driver can plan for unloading, since someone at the delivery end may need to help guide it off.

Is my car insured during a long tow?

Yes. Our company holds a commercial towing policy with AmeriSure. The driver documents the car's condition with photos at pickup and at delivery. Personal belongings left inside the car aren't something we can be responsible for, so please take them out before the trip.

Can you tow an electric vehicle long distance?

Yes. Electric cars ride with every wheel off the road, which is how manufacturers recommend moving them. Put the car in transport or tow mode before loading, or tell the driver how to do it. Our EV towing page covers the details for Teslas and other models.

How far in advance should I book?

A few days' notice gives us the best chance of matching the time you want, especially for runs to other states. Short-notice trips are often possible too, since dispatch is open around the clock. Send the details through the request form or call, and the dispatcher will tell you the earliest open slot.

Do you tow motorcycles long distance?

Yes. A bike can ride on the same flatbed in a wheel chock, strapped upright with soft ties at the bars and frame. Tell the dispatcher the make and model so the driver brings the right chock, and remove saddlebags or anything loose before pickup.

Is long distance towing better than driving the car myself?

If the car runs well and you have the time, driving it is cheaper. A tow makes sense when the car is broken, unregistered, uninsured, has very low mileage you want to protect, or when nobody can spare a full day behind the wheel plus a trip back. The dispatcher can talk through the tradeoff with you.

Can you deliver to a dealership or repair shop instead of a home?

Yes. Many long trips end at a service department, a body shop or a specialist garage. Let the shop know the car is coming and confirm their receiving hours, since a delivery late in the day may need someone to stay a little past closing or a safe spot to leave the car and key.
