Car towing is most of what we do. On a typical day our drivers pick up a Honda CR-V with a failed starter in a Westerville driveway, a Camry with a grinding wheel bearing from a Hilliard office lot, and an F-150 that quit on the way to a job site. None of them are dramatic, but each owner needs the vehicle moved without making the problem worse, and that is the whole point of the job. A careful load and a direct drive to the right address matter more than flashing lights.
Auto Lyft USA runs four light-duty flatbed carriers out of a yard on Harrisburg Pike. Because every truck is a flatbed, there is no question of which end gets lifted or whether a drive axle will spin on the road. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and four-by-four all get the same treatment: the vehicle is pulled onto the deck, the tires are strapped down, and it rides there until it reaches the shop.
We handle passenger cars, crossovers, full-size SUVs, minivans, small and half-ton pickups and most cargo vans that stay inside light-duty weight limits. If you aren't sure where yours falls, give the year, make and model to the dispatcher and you will get a straight answer along with the full price before we commit a truck.
When to call
Situations where car & suv towing is the right call
No-start in the driveway
A car that clicks, cranks without firing or won't shift out of park is a common call. If it turns out to be only the battery, a jump start may save you the tow.
A warning light you don't trust
A flashing check-engine light, low oil pressure or a temperature gauge in the red means it is time to stop driving and have the car carried instead.
Brakes, steering or suspension trouble
A spongy pedal, a clunk over bumps or a wheel that sits at an odd angle makes the car unsafe on Broad Street or anywhere else.
Taking it to a specific shop
Your mechanic in Clintonville, the dealer on Sawmill Road or a transmission specialist across town: you name the place and we deliver to that door.
Moving a car that isn't registered
A project car, an inherited vehicle with expired tags or one you just bought from a private seller can't be driven legally, but it can ride on the deck.
Pickups and family haulers
Half-ton trucks, three-row SUVs and minivans fit our carriers. Heavier work trucks go to our medium-duty towing partners.
On scene
How our drivers handle it
Tell us about the vehicle
Year, make, model, the symptom, whether the wheels turn, and the pickup and drop-off addresses. That is enough for an exact quote.
Confirm the price
You hear one number for the whole tow before a driver is assigned. If it doesn't work for you, nothing has been charged.
Inspection at pickup
The driver looks the vehicle over, notes and photographs any existing scratches or dents, and asks for the key.
Load, strap and drive
The deck tilts down, the winch brings the car aboard, straps go over each tire, and the driver heads straight to your destination.
What fits on our trucks and what doesn't
Our carriers are light-duty, which covers the great majority of vehicles on Columbus roads. The limits come from weight and length, not brand. A loaded one-ton dually, a box truck, a 15-passenger van full of gear or anything with a long trailer attached is outside what a light-duty deck should carry.
When a job is beyond our trucks, we say so on the phone and set it up with a partner heavy-wrecker company so you still only make one call. Those arrangements are explained on the heavy-duty towing page.
- Sedans, coupes, hatchbacks and wagons
- Compact and midsize crossovers
- Full-size SUVs such as Tahoes, Expeditions and Suburbans
- Minivans and most light cargo vans
- Small and half-ton pickups
Around town: common car towing routes
Many of our everyday tows run between home and a repair shop on the same side of town. A breakdown in Gahanna usually heads to a shop along Hamilton Road; one in Dublin often goes to a dealer near Sawmill Road or US-33. From our southwest-side yard, the I-70, I-71 and I-270 interchanges get a truck moving toward any of those quickly.
If you don't have a mechanic, we can take the car to a shop we work with. The repair page explains that option, and you are never obligated to use it.
A few things that make pickup smoother
Most car tows go without a hitch, but small details can hold a driver up for a while. These are the ones we run into most often.
- Clear a path behind the car in the driveway; the deck needs room to tilt down behind it.
- If the car is in a gated apartment complex, give the dispatcher the gate code or the leasing office number.
- Empty the trunk of tools, car seats and anything you will need while the car is at the shop.
- Call the shop ahead of time so they expect the car and know what is wrong with it.
Car & SUV Towing: questions and answers
How much does car towing cost in Columbus?
The price comes from a few things: how far the truck drives to reach you, the miles from pickup to drop-off, whether it is after hours, and any extra work like pulling a car out of a tight spot. The dispatcher gives you the total before dispatch. The rates page breaks down how each piece is calculated.
Can you tow an SUV or a pickup truck?
Yes. Crossovers, full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups all fit on our flatbeds. Very heavy trucks like loaded one-ton duallies, or anything over light-duty weight, are handled through a partner heavy-wrecker company. Give the dispatcher the exact model and we will tell you which applies.
Do you need the keys to tow my car?
Keys make the job easier because the driver can unlock the steering and shift into neutral. If the keys are lost, most cars can still be loaded with skates under the wheels, though it can take a little longer. Let the dispatcher know in advance so the driver brings the right gear.
Can I schedule a tow for later instead of right now?
Yes. If your car is parked safely and the shop can't take it until tomorrow, we can book a pickup for a set day. Call or use the request form and include the addresses and the window that works for you.
Do I have to be there when the car is picked up?
Not always. Many customers leave the key with a neighbor, in a lockbox or with the shop. Before the car goes up the ramp, the driver takes a set of photos that record how it looked. For a vehicle on private property, we may need permission from the property owner or manager.
Will towing hurt my all-wheel-drive car?
Not on a flatbed. AWD damage happens when some wheels turn while others don't, which strains the center differential. Our trucks lift the entire vehicle onto the deck, so no wheel touches the road during the trip. That is one reason we only run flatbeds.
Can you tow a car with a flat or missing tire?
Yes. The winch pulls the car up the deck regardless of tire condition, and a skate can go under a wheel that won't roll. If you only need the spare put on, a roadside flat tire change is cheaper than a tow.
How long does a car tow take?
That depends on the distance to you, the distance to the destination and current traffic. A tow across town during rush hour on I-670 takes longer than the same trip at midnight. The dispatcher gives you a live estimate of when the truck will arrive when you call.
Can you take my car to the dealer?
Yes. We deliver to dealerships across Central Ohio, including the big auto rows off Sawmill Road, Hamilton Road and Stringtown Road. When the service department has already locked up, the car can go in their night-drop area if the dealer allows it, or stay in our yard until morning.
Do you tow cars with expired tags or no plates?
Yes. A vehicle doesn't have to be road-legal to ride on a flatbed. You will need to show you own it or have the owner's permission, which usually means a title, registration or bill of sale with your name on it.
Can I ride along in the tow truck?
In most cases one adult can sit in the cab for a local tow. Ask about it during the call, because the cab has limited room and the driver may already have a passenger. Riding along saves you arranging a separate trip to the shop, and you can talk to the service writer in person when the car is dropped off.
Is your company insured for car towing?
Yes. Auto Lyft USA carries commercial towing insurance through AmeriSure. Our drivers also record each vehicle with photos before it is loaded, so if a question about a scratch or dent comes up later, there is a clear before-and-after record to look at instead of one person's memory against another's.
What is the difference between car towing and roadside assistance?
A tow moves the vehicle to another address. Roadside assistance fixes a small problem where the car sits, like a dead battery, a lockout or a flat, so you can drive away. If you aren't sure which you need, describe the symptoms and the dispatcher will suggest the cheaper option when it is likely to work. See roadside assistance.
Can you move a car that has been sitting for years?
Usually, yes. Long-parked cars often have flat tires, seized brakes or a battery that has been dead for ages, and the winch handles all of that. Tell the dispatcher how long it has been sitting and whether it is on grass, gravel or pavement so the driver can plan the pull.
