Electric Vehicle Help in Columbus: EV Towing With Zero Wheels Down

Electric cars ride entirely on the deck of our carriers, placed in tow or transport mode first, so the drive motors never turn on the way to a charger, a service center or home.

EV towing has one rule we never bend: all four wheels come off the ground. An electric motor is connected to the wheels without a clutch or a neutral gear in the usual sense, so a spinning wheel turns the motor, and a turning motor generates electricity the car isn't expecting. That's why Auto Lyft USA moves every electric vehicle on a flatbed, whether it is a Tesla Model 3 with a dead 12-volt battery or a Mach-E that ran its pack down on I-270.

Our four light-duty carriers are based on Harrisburg Pike (US-62), near the I-70 and I-71 split, and cover Columbus and its suburbs at all hours. Tesla towing makes up a good share of our EV calls, but we regularly load Ford Mustang Mach-Es, Chevy Bolts and Equinox EVs, Hyundai Ioniq 5s and 6s, Kia EV6s and Nissan Leafs. Larger electric trucks and SUVs are heavy, so for a Rivian R1T, R1S or another big EV the dispatcher checks the vehicle's weight against our deck rating before a truck is promised.

Before the driver arrives, find out how to put your car in tow or transport mode; it is usually in the touchscreen menu or the owner's manual. If the car is completely dead and can't enter that mode, tell the dispatcher, because the driver will bring skates to roll locked wheels onto the deck. Call (614) 633-8163 and you'll hear the complete price before we roll.

When to call

Situations where ev & tesla towing is the right call

  • Battery at zero percent

We don't charge EVs at the roadside. An electric car that runs out of range goes on the flatbed to the charger you pick, or to your home outlet.

  • Dead 12-volt battery

Many EVs won't unlock, shift or release the parking brake when the small accessory battery dies. Sometimes a boost to the 12-volt gets the car into transport mode; sometimes it needs skates.

  • Warning light or fault message

A message like 'Pull over safely' or a reduced-power warning usually means a trip to the service center. We take Teslas, Fords, Hyundais and Kias to the shop you name.

  • Collision damage

After a wreck, an electric car's battery pack should be looked at by a qualified shop. See accident towing for how we handle the scene.

  • Flat tire with no spare

Most EVs skip the spare to save weight. When a tire won't hold air, the car rides to a tire shop that handles EV tires.

  • Moving an EV between cities

A new purchase from a Cincinnati or Cleveland dealer, or a move into Central Ohio, works well as a long-distance tow.

On scene

How our drivers handle it

  1. Confirm model and weight

The dispatcher asks the exact model and trim. Light EVs are routine; big electric trucks and SUVs are checked against our deck limits before we commit a truck.

  2. Enter transport mode

With your help or the owner's guide, the driver puts the car in tow or transport mode so the parking brake releases and the wheels roll freely.

  3. Load with every tire up

The deck tilts down and the winch draws the car up slowly. Skates go under any wheel that stays locked, and the cable attaches at the car's designated tow eye.

  4. Strap wheels, not the pack

Wheel straps hold the tires down. Nothing touches the battery pack or the underbody panels, which on most EVs are the floor of the car.

Where we take electric cars around Columbus

Most EV tows end at one of three places: a charger, a service center, or home. When range is the only problem, the fast chargers at Easton Town Center and Polaris Fashion Place are common stops, along with stations near Sawmill Road in Dublin and along Stringtown Road in Grove City. For a mechanical fault, owners usually want the brand's own service center or an independent EV shop.

If you aren't sure where the car should go, the dispatcher can help you figure out which option makes sense for the problem and the hour. Some service centers accept after-hours drop-offs; others need the car held overnight. In that case, it stays at our lot on Harrisburg Pike and goes over in the morning.

Models we tow often, and what to know about each

These notes are general. Your owner's manual is the final word on how your car should be moved.

  • Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X: transport mode is set from the touchscreen and needs 12-volt power. Tow eyes thread into the front bumper behind a small cover.
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: has a tow mode in the settings; with a dead 12-volt, the frunk and doors may need a jump to open.
  • Chevy Bolt and Equinox EV: compact and light, these load easily; follow GM's neutral or tow-mode procedure.
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6: low front ends benefit from our low profile towing approach with ramp extensions.
  • Nissan Leaf: one of the lightest EVs on the road and a routine flatbed load.
  • Rivian R1T and R1S: weight varies by battery and trim, so the dispatcher confirms whether one of our light-duty carriers is rated for it before sending a truck.

EV & Tesla Towing: questions and answers

Why does EV towing require a flatbed?

Electric motors are tied directly to the wheels, so rolling an EV with any wheels on the pavement turns the motors and can push current back into the system or damage the drive unit. Most manufacturers, Tesla included, tell owners to haul the car on a carrier deck with no tire on the road. That's the only way we move them.

Do you offer Tesla towing in Columbus?

Yes. We move Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles regularly. The driver will ask you to enable transport mode from the touchscreen, then load the car with tow eyes or skates. We can take it to a Tesla service center, a body shop, a Supercharger or your home.

How much does EV towing cost?

The price is built from the distance to reach your car, the miles to its destination, the hour you call, plus extras like skates or a winch-out. Electric vehicles don't carry a separate surcharge just for being electric. The dispatcher quotes it all before dispatch; see our rates page.

Can you charge my EV instead of towing it?

No. Our trucks don't carry mobile charging gear. When an EV is at zero, the fix is a short flatbed ride to a working charger. We can usually drop it right at an open stall, so you can plug in as soon as the car is off the deck.

How soon can a truck get to my electric car?

That depends on distance and traffic at the time you call. Our dispatcher works out a current estimate while you are on the phone and revises it if conditions shift. Electric cars don't need special trucks beyond our standard flatbeds, so you won't wait for a particular rig.

Can you tow a Rivian or other large electric truck?

It depends on the specific vehicle's weight. Large electric pickups and SUVs can be much heavier than a gas equivalent because of the battery. The dispatcher asks for the model and trim and checks it against our carriers' rated capacity. If it is over, we tell you right away and help arrange a heavier truck.

My EV is completely dead and won't go into neutral. Can you still move it?

Yes. When a car can't release its parking brake, the driver places wheel skates under the locked tires and winches the car onto the deck on the skates. It takes a little longer than a normal load but doesn't drag the tires. A boost to the 12-volt battery sometimes wakes the car enough to shift.

Do you tow hybrids too?

Yes. Plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids get the same flatbed treatment. Many hybrids have electric motors linked to the wheels just like a full EV, so carrying them with every wheel up is the safe choice. Mild hybrids that share a regular transmission still go on the deck, since every truck in our fleet is a carrier anyway.

Is it safe to tow an EV after an accident?

Yes, with care. A damaged battery can occasionally overheat hours or days after a crash, so a wrecked EV should go to a shop or lot where it can be watched and parked away from other cars. Tell the dispatcher about any smoke, hissing or a strong smell; if you notice those, move away from the car and call 911.

Where can you take my Tesla or other EV?

Anywhere you want within reason: a manufacturer service center, an independent EV shop, a collision center, a fast charger at Easton or Polaris, or your own driveway. For trips beyond Central Ohio, ask about long-distance transport. If the destination is closed when we arrive, the car waits at our yard until it opens.

Will my EV's low front end scrape the ramp?

Several EVs, especially the Ioniq 6, EV6 and Model 3, sit fairly low up front. We lower the deck as far as it goes and use ramp extensions to soften the angle, then pull slowly while watching the bumper. Let the dispatcher know if your car has an aftermarket splitter or lowered suspension.

Do I have to be with the car for an EV tow?

It helps, because transport mode is often set from inside the car or from a phone app. If you can't be there, arrange to leave the key card or fob with someone and tell the dispatcher how the car should be put in tow mode. We may also ask for proof that you own the car.
