Junk car removal is for the vehicle that isn't worth fixing and isn't going anywhere on its own: a sedan with a blown engine in the driveway, a truck that sank into the side yard, a project car that never got finished. Auto Lyft USA hauls these cars out of homes, rental properties and small business lots around Columbus with the same flatbed carriers we use for everyday tows. Flat tires, missing wheels and seized brakes don't stop the winch, and a car buried in weeds or parked against a fence can usually be pulled clear first.
What we do need is proof that the car is yours to get rid of. That means an Ohio title in the name of the person releasing the car. In Ohio, ownership changes hands through a title office or the BMV, so the paperwork has to be in order before a car leaves. If the title is lost or still lists a late relative or an old lender, the dispatcher will explain what needs to happen first rather than taking the car anyway.
Call (614) 633-8163 with the year, make and model, the car's condition and where it sits. The dispatcher explains whether there is a charge for hauling that particular car or whether any scrap credit applies, based on what it is and where it is going. You'll know before a truck is scheduled.
When to call
Situations where junk car removal is the right call
Dead car in the driveway
An engine failure that would cost more than the car is worth leaves it parked for good. We clear the spot so you can use it again.
Inherited or estate vehicles
Clearing a parent's house often turns up a car in the garage that hasn't run in years. The title needs to be transferred properly first; the dispatcher explains how.
HOA or city notice
A neighborhood association or code enforcement letter about an inoperable vehicle usually comes with a deadline. Call early so pickup fits that window.
Rental property cleanup
Landlords clearing a unit sometimes find a car left behind. If it isn't yours, see private property towing for the legal route instead.
Wrecked and not worth repairing
A car your insurer declined to fix, or one you chose not to repair after a crash, can be hauled once the title situation is settled.
Project cars that never got finished
Stripped shells, cars on blocks and parts cars in the backyard can all go, as long as the winch can pull them up the deck.
On scene
How our drivers handle it
Confirm ownership
The dispatcher asks about the title: whose name it is in, whether it is signed, and whether a lien is shown. That is settled before scheduling.
Explain the cost or credit
Based on the car and its destination, the dispatcher tells you whether there is a charge or any scrap credit, so nothing is a surprise.
Pull it out
The driver reaches the car, frees it from mud, weeds or blocks if needed, and winches it onto the deck even if the wheels don't turn.
Strap it and leave
The car is secured for the trip, the title paperwork is handled as discussed, and the spot it left behind is ready for you to use.
Ohio title steps, in plain terms
A car can only be removed by the person who owns it, and in Ohio the title is the proof. The owner named on the title signs it over, and the transfer is recorded through a title office or the BMV. Ohio titles generally need the seller's signature notarized, so check that before pickup day if you can.
After the car is gone, a few loose ends are on you as the former owner.
- Take your license plates off before the truck leaves. In Ohio the plates stay with you, not the car.
- Call your insurance company to cancel or change the policy once the car is out of your hands.
- Clean out the glovebox, trunk and under the seats, including garage remotes, toll tags and personal papers.
- If a bank or lender is listed on the title, you'll need a lien release before the car can go.
- For a lost title, the county title office can issue a duplicate to the owner of record.
Where we haul junk cars from
Most calls come from residential driveways and backyards in Columbus neighborhoods and the surrounding suburbs, from Whitehall and Reynoldsburg to Grove City. Rural properties in Madison, Pickaway and Licking counties often have older vehicles parked in fields or behind barns, and we go out to those as well when the truck can reach them on firm ground.
If the car might be worth saving after all, a shop's opinion can help you decide; our repair shop towing page explains how we move a car to a mechanic for an estimate.
Junk Car Removal: questions and answers
How does junk car removal work with Auto Lyft USA?
You call with the car's details and location, and the dispatcher confirms the title is in your name. They explain whether there is a charge or a scrap credit for that car, then schedule a flatbed. The driver winches the car onto the deck, and you keep your plates and cancel your insurance afterward.
Do you pay cash for junk cars?
No, we don't make cash offers for cars. Depending on the car's condition and where it ends up, the haul may carry a charge, or some scrap value may offset it. The dispatcher explains which applies to your car on the phone, before anything is scheduled, so you can decide.
Do I need a title to have my junk car removed?
Yes. We need proof of ownership, which in Ohio means a title in the name of the person releasing the car. That protects you and keeps the transfer legal. If the title is lost, the owner of record can apply for a duplicate at a county title office first.
What if the title is in a deceased relative's name?
Ohio has specific steps for moving a vehicle out of a deceased owner's name, handled at a county title office and sometimes through probate court. The dispatcher can't settle the estate for you, but they can point you to the right first steps and schedule pickup once the title is in the right name.
Can you remove a car with flat tires or no wheels?
Yes. The winch drags the car onto the deck, so flat or missing tires, locked brakes and seized wheels aren't a problem. Cars sitting on blocks need room for the driver to work and may take a little longer to load safely.
Should I remove my license plates?
Yes. In Ohio, plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. Take them off before the car leaves, and keep them or return them to the BMV. Leaving plates on a car you no longer own can cause trouble if the car is later found or ticketed.
When should I cancel insurance on a junk car?
After the car has left your property and the title is signed over. Canceling earlier may leave you without coverage if something happens while the car is still parked. Check with your insurance company about any refund for an unused portion of the policy.
How long until a truck can pick up my junk car?
Junk removals are usually scheduled rather than emergency calls. The timing depends on the truck schedule, how far you are from the yard and traffic. The dispatcher gives you a window when you book, and a live estimate if it is needed the same day.
Can you take a car out of a backyard or field?
Yes, if the carrier can get within reach on firm ground. The winch cable lets the truck stay on a driveway or lane while pulling the car toward it. After heavy rain, soft ground may need to dry out first. Tell the dispatcher about fences, gates and narrow paths.
Will there be a charge for junk car removal?
It depends on the car, its condition and where it is going. Some removals carry a fee and some cars carry a scrap credit that offsets part or all of it. The dispatcher explains which applies to your car before a truck is scheduled. The rates page shows how our charges work in general.
Can you haul away a car that isn't mine?
Not as junk. A car left on your property by someone else isn't yours to dispose of without following Ohio's rules for abandoned vehicles. Property owners and managers should look at our private property towing page or contact the local police department about the proper steps.
Do you remove junk trucks and vans too?
Yes, provided the vehicle stays under what a light-duty carrier is rated to carry. Most pickups, SUVs and minivans do. Larger box trucks and commercial vans may need a different truck, and the dispatcher will tell you on the first call.
Do I need to be home when the car is picked up?
It is best if you are, so the title can be signed and checked and you can point out the car. If that is not possible, talk through the plan with the dispatcher beforehand, including where the key and signed paperwork will be.
What junk car removal costs
This work is priced per job because the equipment, distance and time vary so much. Call (614) 633-8163 with the details and the office quotes it before anything is scheduled. See the rates page for our standard charges.
