Columbus Low Profile Towing for Lowered and Exotic Cars

Splitters, air dams and slammed suspensions need a gentle climb onto the carrier. We lower the angle with ramp boards and pull the car up an inch at a time.

Low profile towing is about one thing: getting a car that sits close to the pavement onto a truck without touching its nose, rocker panels or exhaust. Auto Lyft USA handles these loads around Columbus with tilt-deck flatbed carriers, ramp extensions and a winch run at a crawl. A driver watches the front lip the whole way up, and the car is secured with soft straps over the tires rather than chains near the body.

The usual customers are owners of Corvettes, Porsches, Miatas on coilovers, stanced imports, track-day builds and late-model sports sedans with factory aero. Many of these cars clear a speed bump with a finger's width to spare. On a carrier with a standard approach angle, the bumper cover can catch at the hinge point where the deck meets the road. Our job is to remove that hinge point, or make it so shallow that nothing contacts it. Electric sports cars with battery packs low in the floor get the same treatment.

When you call (614) 633-8163, give the dispatcher the car's year and model, a rough figure for its ground clearance the car has, and whether anything hangs below the bumper, such as a splitter or a long exhaust. That tells the driver how many boards to bring. You get the full price for the job before anyone heads your way.

When to call

Situations where low profile towing is the right call

  • Lowered on coilovers or air

A static drop or bagged suspension that is aired out leaves very little room under the chassis. We stack ramp boards so the tires climb before the body reaches the deck tail.

  • Front splitters and lips

Carbon or plastic aero that extends past the bumper is the first thing to hit. The driver checks its height at the tail of the deck before the winch moves at all.

  • Supercars and track cars

Mid-engine cars with long overhangs and wide tires get the slowest load we do, with a spotter at the nose and soft straps at every wheel.

  • Car show and meet days

A build that won't restart after a cruise night or a show in the Short North or at the fairgrounds can ride home on the deck instead of being pushed around the lot.

  • Mechanical failure on a weekend drive

A broken axle, a dead clutch or an overheating engine on a back road calls for the same careful loading as a breakdown in town.

  • Moving a project car

Builds headed to a tuner, a paint shop or storage often sit lower than stock. See flatbed towing for how our carriers handle ordinary cars too.

On scene

How our drivers handle it

  1. Measure the clearance

The driver checks the lowest point at the nose and under the doors, then compares it with the deck angle before choosing how many boards to lay down.

  2. Build the ramp

The carrier bed tilts all the way to the pavement, and ramp extensions go under the tires to soften the climb at the tail.

  3. Winch at a walking pace

The cable pulls the car up slowly while someone watches the lip and rockers, stopping to add height under the wheels if the gap closes.

  4. Soft straps, nothing on the body

Wheel straps wrap the tires only. Hooks stay away from painted surfaces, diffusers and aftermarket suspension parts.

What helps us load a lowered car without a scratch

Most damage to low cars during a tow happens in the first two feet of the climb. A few details from you before the truck rolls make that part routine.

  • If the car has air suspension, raise it to full ride height before we arrive, if it still holds pressure.
  • Remove a detachable front lip or license plate bracket if it hangs low and comes off easily.
  • Mention a center-lock wheel, a staggered setup or tires wider than usual so the straps fit.
  • Leave the key or fob with the car so the steering unlocks and it can roll in neutral.
  • If it needs to go to a specific shop, have the name and address ready for the dispatcher.

Where we pick up low cars around Central Ohio

Calls come from home garages in Dublin, Powell and New Albany, from summer car meets at Easton and Polaris lots, and from shops and storage units across the west side near our Harrisburg Pike yard. We also pick up from parking garages, where a low car can be trickier still because of tight ramps; our parking garage towing page covers how those jobs work.

For a car that is going a long way, such as to a specialist in Cleveland or Indianapolis, the loading process is the same and the trip is priced as long-distance towing.

Why the deck angle matters so much

A carrier bed tilted to the ground forms a slope, and the sharpest bend is where that slope meets the road. A stock sedan rolls over it without noticing. A car with three inches under the splitter can wedge its nose into that bend before the front tires even start climbing.

Ramp boards change the geometry. By lifting the front wheels first, they raise the nose above the bend, so the body is already higher when it reaches the deck. Our drivers add boards in steps and stop the winch to recheck the gap, which is slower than a normal load but leaves the bodywork untouched.

Low Profile Towing: questions and answers

What is low profile towing?

It is flatbed towing set up for cars with very little ground clearance. We lower the deck all the way, add ramp boards under the tires to reduce the climb angle, winch slowly with someone watching the nose, and strap only at the tires. The goal is to load the car without the bumper, splitter or rockers touching anything.

How much does low profile towing cost in Columbus?

Cost comes down to the pickup spot, the destination, the hour and whether loading needs extra boards or time. The dispatcher quotes the whole job on the phone before a truck is assigned, so there is no surprise at drop-off. The rates page explains how each part of a tow is figured.

My car is only a few inches off the ground. Can you still load it?

Usually yes. The more boards we stack under the tires, the higher the car sits as it reaches the tail of the deck, which gives the front end room to clear. Tell the dispatcher the lowest measurement you know so the driver brings enough ramp extensions for your car.

Do you use wheel-lift trucks for low cars?

No. Every truck in our fleet is a light-duty flatbed carrier, and for a lowered car that is the right tool. A wheel-lift lifts one end and drags the other, which is risky for a car with a low rear diffuser or exhaust and puts strain on the drivetrain.

How do you strap down an exotic car?

We use soft straps that loop over the tires and pull down into the deck. Nothing hooks to the suspension, the subframe or any painted surface. On cars with large wheels and thin sidewalls, the driver positions the straps so they don't press against the rim face.

Can you tow a car with air suspension that has lost pressure?

Yes, though it takes more boards and more time because the car sits at its lowest. If any pressure is left, raise it before we arrive. If the system is completely down, let the dispatcher know so the driver plans for the lowest possible approach.

How soon can a truck reach me?

It depends on how far you are from the nearest available carrier and on traffic at that hour. On the phone, our dispatcher shares a live estimate for your address and calls back if it shifts. We dispatch around the clock, every day of the year.

Will you tow my car home from a car show or meet?

Yes. Call when the car won't start or can't be driven, and give the dispatcher the venue and where the car is parked within it. Show lots can be crowded, so it helps if you can clear a path behind the car for the deck to tilt down.

Can you take a lowered car to a specialist outside Columbus?

Yes. Many owners send sports and exotic cars to a specific tuner or dealer in another city. The car loads the same way, and the dispatcher prices the full trip before dispatch. Longer trips can be scheduled ahead so the shop is ready to receive it.

What if my car has a low exhaust or rear diffuser?

The rear of a low car matters as the deck levels out. The driver watches the back as well as the front, and adds boards or adjusts the tilt so the tail of the car clears the deck as it moves forward.

Do I need to be there when you pick up the car?

It is better if you are, especially for an expensive or modified car, so you can point out anything fragile. If you can't be there, arrange for the key to be available and tell the dispatcher about every low part. The driver photographs the car before loading either way.

Can you tow a lowered truck or SUV?

Yes, if it fits within the weight rating of a light-duty carrier. Lowered pickups and SUVs usually load more easily than sports cars because their wheelbase spreads the angle, but the same slow process and soft straps apply. Tell the dispatcher about lift kits removed, drop spindles or a low front valance so the driver knows what to watch.

Do you tow low cars in the rain or snow?

Yes, though wet ramp boards and decks call for extra care. The driver may take more time to position the tires and check traction during the winch pull. In winter, salt and slush on the deck are cleared before the car goes up.
