Accident towing starts the moment the officer says the car can be moved, or the moment you realize after a fender-bender that it can't be driven home. Auto Lyft USA sends a flatbed to crash scenes across Columbus at any hour, loads the damaged vehicle onto the deck with the loose pieces beside it, sweeps the glass and broken plastic off the pavement, and delivers the car to a collision shop, your home or our yard on Harrisburg Pike.
A wrecked car is a poor candidate for being towed with its wheels on the road. Bent control arms, a wheel pushed back into the fender, a flat tire, a radiator leaking coolant and a bumper cover hanging by one clip all ride better on a deck than dragged behind a truck. Our fleet is four light-duty flatbeds, so every crashed vehicle we handle travels fully off the ground.
You also get to decide where the car goes. If police called a rotation tow for you, that is their call to make, but when you call us yourself you can pick the destination. If you don't know which body shop to use yet, we can store it until your insurer and you have decided, which keeps you from paying for a second tow later. The dispatcher quotes the whole job, including any cleanup, before the truck is sent.
When to call
Situations where accident towing is the right call
Freeway collisions
Stop-and-go traffic on the outerbelt, I-70 through downtown and SR-315 produces plenty of rear-end crashes. Once the lanes are safe, we load the car from the shoulder.
Intersection and parking lot crashes
A T-bone at a busy light on Morse Road or a low-speed hit in a grocery lot can still leave a car unsafe to drive.
Single-car slide-offs
Ice, rain or a deer can put a car into a guardrail or a ditch. A winch-out gets it back on the pavement first if needed.
Airbags deployed
Once airbags go off, most cars shouldn't be driven until they are inspected. Deployed bags also often mean damage you can't see.
Leaking fluids
Coolant, oil or transmission fluid on the ground means the car shouldn't be started again. We load it without running the engine.
Hit while parked
Came back to a car that was struck overnight on a city street? We pick it up and take it to the shop your insurer approves.
On scene
How our drivers handle it
Safety and clearance
If police are on scene, the driver checks in with them first. Nothing is moved until the officer has what they need.
Document the damage
Photos of the vehicle from every side record the crash damage before loading, which helps your claim and protects everyone.
Load and clean up
The car is winched up, loose parts go on the deck with it, and broken glass and plastic are swept from the roadway.
Deliver where the claim needs it
Your chosen body shop, an insurer's inspection site, your home or our secure yard until the adjuster decides.
What to do right after a crash in Columbus
Right after a collision, it is hard to think clearly. A short checklist helps you keep the important things straight while you wait for police and a truck.
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt or if vehicles are blocking traffic.
- If the cars can move and no one is injured, it is usually safest to steer them out of the travel lanes and onto the shoulder or a side street.
- Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance details and plate numbers with the other driver.
- Take your own photos of both cars, the scene, road signs and any skid marks.
- Ask the officer for the report number so you can request the crash report later.
- Call your insurer to open a claim, then call us at (614) 633-8163 to move the car.
Police rotation tows versus calling us yourself
When a crash blocks a road and the driver can't or doesn't request a specific company, Columbus police and the Franklin County Sheriff may call a tow from their rotation list. In that case the car goes to that company's lot, and you deal with them.
If you are able to make the call before police request a rotation tow, you can usually ask for the company you want. That lets you choose where the car is taken and avoid a second tow from an impound lot to the body shop later. The officer has the final say if a lane needs to be cleared quickly.
Working with your insurance company
Many policies cover towing after a collision, either under collision coverage or a separate roadside benefit. We give you an itemized receipt for your claim. If the adjuster wants the car at a particular shop or inspection site, tell us and we will deliver it there, or hold it at our yard while you sort it out. For questions about storage and fees, see the rates page, and our repair page explains the collision shops we can recommend if you don't have one.
Accident Towing: questions and answers
How much does accident towing cost in Columbus?
It depends on the distance to the scene, the miles to the destination, the hour, and how much cleanup or recovery is needed. A car in a ditch takes more work than one sitting on a shoulder. The dispatcher gives you a full quote before a truck goes out; the rates page shows how each charge is figured.
Can I choose where my wrecked car is towed?
Yes, when you are the one calling for the tow. You can send it to any body shop, a dealership, your home or our yard. If police have already ordered a rotation tow because the road had to be cleared, the car goes to that company first and you can move it from there later.
Will my insurance pay for the tow?
Many auto policies include towing after an accident, especially with collision coverage, and some plans reimburse you after you submit the receipt. Call your insurer or check your policy's roadside or towing benefit, and we will give you an itemized bill for the claim.
Do you clean up debris after an accident?
Yes. The driver sweeps up broken glass and loose plastic from the roadway and puts large pieces from your car on the deck with it. Spilled fluids are absorbed with a dry absorbent when the spill is small. Big fuel or chemical spills are handled by the fire department.
Where will my car be stored if the body shop is closed?
It stays in our southwest-side yard off US-62 until the shop opens and has room, then we bring it over. Ask the dispatcher whether storage charges apply for the number of days you expect, so you know the cost before you decide where the car should wait.
Can you get my belongings out of the car later?
Yes. If your car is at our yard, call ahead and set a time to come by and collect personal items like a car seat, a laptop bag or work tools. Bring an ID so the staff can confirm the car is yours.
Do you need the police report before towing?
No. We can tow the car as soon as police release it from the scene. You will want the report number for your insurance claim, so ask the officer for it. Full reports can usually be requested from the Columbus Division of Police or the agency that responded.
Can a car with airbags deployed be towed?
Yes. A car with deployed airbags is loaded on the flatbed the same way as any other damaged vehicle. It shouldn't be driven, because the airbag system needs to be inspected and reset and there is often hidden structural damage behind the visible dents.
Do you handle accidents involving trucks or buses?
Our own trucks carry cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups. When a crash involves a box truck, a bus or a semi, we arrange the recovery through a partner heavy-wrecker company. The dispatcher tells you which company is coming. See heavy-duty towing for more detail.
How long until the tow truck arrives at the accident?
That depends on where the crash happened, how many trucks are already out and what traffic looks like. Crashes themselves slow freeway traffic, which affects arrival too. The dispatcher looks at where the closest driver is right now and passes along an honest arrival estimate while you are still on the phone.
What if my car is totaled?
If the insurer declares the car a total loss, they usually arrange to move it to a salvage auction. Until then it can stay at our yard or the shop. If you are keeping the salvage yourself, the flatbed can take it to your garage or to whoever is buying it; our junk car removal page explains that route.
Can you tow the other driver's car too?
Yes, if they ask us to and we have a truck free. Each car needs its own flatbed, so the dispatcher may send a second truck. The other driver arranges and pays for their own tow unless an insurer has agreed otherwise.
Is accident towing available on weekends and holidays?
Yes. Crashes don't wait for office hours, and our dispatch is open every day of the year. Holiday and late-night calls may cost more, but any extra charge is part of the quote you agree to before the truck heads your way.
