Car battery replacement is the step after a jump stops being enough. If your car has needed a boost more than once in the past few weeks, if it cranks slowly every cold morning, or if a test shows the battery cannot hold a charge, putting in a new one is usually the fix. Auto Lyft USA brings that service to you in Columbus, so you do not have to coax a weak car to a parts store and hope it restarts in their lot, or leave it sitting while you wait on a friend with cables.
Batteries are not one size fits all. Before a driver comes out, the dispatcher takes your year, make, model and engine, and the battery is matched to the group size and specs your vehicle calls for, including the cold-cranking rating, terminal layout and type, such as flooded or AGM. We test the old battery first so you are not paying for a part you do not need, then test the new installation and the charging system before we leave.
The old battery goes back with us and is taken for recycling, since lead-acid batteries should never end up in the trash. Call (614) 633-8163 and you will hear the full price for the battery and installation before anyone heads your way. If you just need a boost, our jump start page covers that.
When to call
Situations where car battery replacement is the right call
Repeated jumps
A car that needed a boost last week and needs one again today is telling you the battery is worn out. Replacing it ends the cycle.
Slow crank on cold mornings
Central Ohio winters expose tired batteries. If the engine labors to turn over whenever the temperature drops, the battery is usually losing capacity.
Battery age
Many batteries start to weaken after a few years, sooner in hot summers. A date code on the case tells you how old yours is.
Warning light or electrical glitches
Flickering lights, a battery or charging warning on the dash, or a radio that resets can point to a failing battery, though the alternator can cause similar symptoms.
Swollen, leaking or corroded
A bulging case, acid residue or heavy buildup on the terminals means the battery should come out. We do not jump batteries in that condition.
Stuck somewhere inconvenient
Work lots, apartment complexes in Grove City and Gahanna, and campus garages are hard places to wait for a ride. We install on site instead.
On scene
How our drivers handle it
Match the battery
Your vehicle details tell us the correct group size, terminal position, cold-cranking rating and battery type, so the replacement fits and works as designed.
Test the old one
The driver checks the existing battery and connections on arrival to confirm it really is the problem before anything is removed.
Swap and secure
The old battery comes out, terminals and clamps are cleaned, the new one goes in and the hold-down is tightened so it cannot shift.
Test again and recycle
The driver starts the car, checks the new battery and the charging output, and takes the old battery for recycling.
Why we test before replacing
A dead battery is the most common cause of a no-start, but it is not the only one. A loose ground cable, a corroded terminal, a failing alternator or an electrical drain can all leave a good battery flat. Putting a new battery into a car with a bad alternator just means a second dead battery a few days later.
So the driver tests first. If the old battery checks out and something else is wrong, you will hear that, along with options such as hauling the car on our deck to a repair shop you choose. If the battery is the problem, we replace it and then confirm the alternator is charging the new one properly.
Cars that need a little extra
Some vehicles make a battery change more involved than loosening two clamps. The dispatcher will ask about these when you call.
- Batteries mounted under a seat, in the trunk or behind a wheel-well panel, common on many European cars and some SUVs.
- Start-stop vehicles that use AGM or enhanced flooded batteries; the replacement has to match that type.
- Cars whose computers expect to be told a new battery was installed. If yours needs that step, we will tell you whether it can be done on site or needs a dealer or shop.
- Radios, navigation units or window settings that may reset after the swap. Have any radio codes handy.
- Hybrids with a separate 12-volt battery. We replace the 12-volt unit only, not the high-voltage pack.
Battery calls around town
The first hard freeze of the season brings a wave of these calls, from driveways in Westerville and Pickerington to commuter lots along I-70 and the surface lots near Broad Street downtown. Students parked for weeks in the OSU-area lots off Lane Avenue are another regular source, since a car that sits through a cold spell often will not wake up.
Wherever you are in the areas we serve, the process is the same: describe the car, get the quote, and a driver brings the matched battery to you.
Car Battery Replacement: questions and answers
How much does car battery replacement cost?
The total depends on the battery your vehicle requires, since a standard flooded battery and a large AGM unit for a start-stop SUV are very different parts, plus your location and the hour. Dispatch quotes the full job, battery and installation together, before anyone is sent. See our rates page for more on pricing.
What brand of battery do you install?
We focus on fit and specification rather than a single brand. The replacement is matched to your vehicle's group size, terminal layout, cold-cranking rating and battery type. If you have a preference, mention it when you call and the dispatcher will tell you what is possible for that job.
How do I know it is the battery and not the alternator?
Often you cannot tell from the driver's seat. A battery that is dead in the morning but runs fine all day leans toward the battery, while lights dimming as you drive or a warning light on the road leans toward the alternator. Our driver tests both, so you only replace what has actually failed.
How long does the swap take once the driver arrives?
On most cars, the swap itself is a fairly quick job. Vehicles with batteries under seats, in the trunk or behind panels take longer. Arrival time depends on distance and traffic, so the dispatcher offers a live estimate on the phone that you can plan around.
Will I lose my radio presets or settings?
Possibly. Some cars keep their memory, others reset the clock, radio stations, seat memory or power windows. On certain cars a memory saver can be connected during the swap to reduce resets. Have any anti-theft radio code ready, often found in the owner's manual.
What do you do with the old battery?
It leaves in our truck and goes off for recycling. Car batteries contain lead and acid, and nearly every part can be reclaimed. Ohio retailers and recyclers collect them for exactly this reason, so there is no need for you to store or haul the old one anywhere.
Can you replace the battery in my hybrid?
We can replace the 12-volt auxiliary battery that powers up most hybrids and EVs. That small battery is a common cause of a hybrid that will not turn on. We do not service the high-voltage drive battery; that is dealer or specialist work.
Do you replace batteries in trucks and SUVs?
Yes, most light trucks, SUVs and vans. Some diesel pickups use two batteries, and replacing both at once is often recommended so they match. The dispatcher will ask about your engine so the right size and quantity are brought out for the job.
Is there a warranty on the new battery?
Warranty terms vary with the battery that fits your car, so ask the dispatcher when you call and the driver will leave you the paperwork that comes with it. Keep your receipt somewhere you can find it, and note the install date on your phone or in the glovebox.
Can you put in a battery I bought myself?
In some cases, yes. If you already have the correct battery, tell the dispatcher what you bought and we can quote installation, testing and recycling of the old one. The driver will check that it matches your car's requirements and has a proper charge before installing it.
Can you come to my workplace or apartment complex?
Yes. Most battery changes take place in the spot the car already occupies, be it an office lot in Dublin, an apartment complex on the north side or a garage at your building. Give the dispatcher the address, the spot or level, and any gate code or check-in steps.
How long should a car battery last in Ohio?
It varies with heat, cold, driving habits and the vehicle's electrical load. Hot summers wear down the internals, and our cold winters reveal the damage when the starter asks for its biggest draw. Lots of short trips also shorten battery life. Having it tested as it gets older helps you replace it on your schedule rather than in a parking lot.
My car died after sitting for months. Do I need a new battery?
Not always. A battery that sat flat for a long time may recover with a charge, or it may have been permanently damaged. The driver can jump the car and test the battery, and then you can decide whether to replace it or try driving and recharging.
