University District Towing Around the OSU Campus

Student rentals, game-day crowds, move-in weekends and a lot of cars that only get driven once a month. We know the campus area calendar and plan our trucks around it.

  • Open 24/7, 365 days
  • Flatbed-only fleet
  • Price quoted before dispatch
  • Licensed & insured

The University District is the Ohio State neighborhood: the main campus west of North High Street, and the blocks of rental houses, apartments and older homes to the east and north of it, roughly from Fifth Avenue up to Lane Avenue and the edge of Old North. Its traffic follows the school year. August move-in, football Saturdays at Ohio Stadium, finals week and May move-out each change what our calls look like.

A big share of the work is roadside help rather than towing. Student cars that sit for weeks behind a house on Indianola or in a lot off 13th Avenue come back with flat batteries and soft tires. Keys get locked in cars outside Newport Music Hall and South Campus Gateway. When a car does need to go somewhere, it is usually to a shop, a dealer, or back home to a parent's driveway in another city, which we handle as a long-distance tow.

We come from 1620 Harrisburg Pike, southwest of Downtown, so every campus call is a trip north. The driver chooses between I-71, which exits at 11th and 17th Avenues on the east side of the district, and SR-315, which has a Lane Avenue exit on the west side near the stadium. High Street itself is a slow but direct backup. On game days we route around the closures. Call (614) 633-8163 or request a tow online, and you get the price before the truck leaves.

Street by street

Where we pick up cars in University District

  • North High Street

Divides campus from the off-campus blocks. Buses, bikes and pedestrians everywhere, so the driver loads on a side street when possible.

  • Summit Street and Fourth Street (US-23)

A one-way pair east of High carrying US-23 through the rental neighborhood. Cars break down in the curb lanes during rush hour.

  • Indianola Avenue

A residential street lined with student houses and small lots, where many of our dead-battery calls come from.

  • Lane Avenue

The northern edge of campus, leading to SR-315 and Ohio Stadium. Very congested before and after games.

  • I-71 at 11th and 17th Avenues

The interstate exits on the east side of the district, and our usual way in from the south.

  • Woodruff Avenue

Forms the northern edge of the Indianola Forest blocks between High and Fourth. Parked cars narrow it to a single lane in spots, so the driver may need to back in.

  • Dennison Place

Part of the quieter, more owner-occupied pocket on the campus side of High, south of 11th Avenue. Driveways here are short, and a flatbed usually loads from the street.

  • Borror Drive

The address of the Schottenstein Center. Arena lots empty all at once after events; a car that will not start there can often be fixed with a jump instead of a tow.

  • SR-315 at Lane Avenue and King Avenue

Freeway exits on the west side of campus, near the stadium and the medical center.

University District towing questions

Can you tow my car on an Ohio State game day?

Yes, but plan for delays. On home game Saturdays the streets around Ohio Stadium fill hours before kickoff, police close or restrict some roads, and Lane Avenue and SR-315 back up badly. If your car is near the stadium, the driver may only be able to reach it after the crowd thins. If you are east of High Street, it is usually easier. The dispatcher will tell you honestly what to expect.

My car got blocked in or towed during move-in weekend. Can you help?

If your own car broke down or is stuck, yes; we can tow it or jump it. If the city or a landlord already had it towed, it will be at an impound lot, not with us, and you need to contact that lot to get it back. Move-in and move-out weekends bring many extra parking rules around campus, so read posted signs carefully before leaving a car on the street.

My car has been sitting behind my rental all semester and won't start. What now?

That is the most common call we get in the University District. A battery sitting for months in a cold lot is often drained. The driver brings a booster and tries a jump for the $75 roadside fee, and checks the tires while there. A battery that will not take a charge can be swapped for a new one on site or tow the car to a shop. See car battery replacement.

Can you tow my car home to my parents' house in another city?

Yes. We regularly move student cars from campus to other parts of Ohio and beyond at the end of a semester or after a breakdown. Long tows are priced the same way as local ones: $125 hook-up, $7 per loaded mile and $4 per mile from our yard to you. The dispatcher quotes the whole trip before the driver leaves, so you can compare it with the cost of a repair.

How does the truck get to campus from your yard?

Our yard is southwest of Downtown, so the driver heads north. For cars east of High Street, I-71 to the 11th or 17th Avenue exit is usually fastest. For the west side of campus, near the stadium or medical center, SR-315 to Lane or King Avenue makes more sense. On football Saturdays we avoid both if they are jammed and come up local streets instead.

Do you tow from apartment garages and lots near campus?

Yes. Many newer buildings along High Street and in the district have parking decks, and some have low ceilings. Give the dispatcher the building name and garage level. If the carrier cannot fit, the driver brings the car to the entrance first. If a gate or attendant is involved, let the building staff know we are coming. More on our parking garage towing page.

Keys stuck inside the car on High Street. Can you open it?

Yes. Lockouts are a flat $75, and our drivers use air wedges and reach tools that do not damage paint, weather stripping or glass. Have your student ID or driver's license ready, since the driver must confirm you own the car or have permission to use it. If the key fob is locked inside with a push-button car, we still open it the same way. See car lockout service.

Can you tow a car parked in a private lot without a permit?

We tow vehicles from private lots only for the lot owner or manager, under a written agreement and with proper signs posted, as Ohio law requires. If you are a property manager near campus, call to set that up through our private property towing program. If you are a student whose car was taken from a lot, call the number on the posted sign to find out where it went.
