Berwick Towing Along the Old Golf Course Streets
Berwick's streets bend around the ghost of a 1930s golf course, which is good for quiet blocks and tricky for out-of-town GPS units.

Berwick is a mostly residential east-side neighborhood south of Bexley, bordered by East Livingston Avenue to the north and James Road to the east, with I-70 bending around its southern and western sides. A businessman named Emil Ambos once kept a country retreat here, and in the early 1930s a golf course was laid out between Berwick Boulevard and Scottwood Road. When the course gave way to houses after World War II, the new streets followed its fairways, which is why so many Berwick roads curve, loop and dead-end where a straight grid would run.
Most homes date from the 1950s and later: ranches, split-levels and brick two-stories with driveways and attached or detached garages. That makes towing simpler than in the older city neighborhoods, since a flatbed can usually back up the driveway and load in place. What slows us down is finding the right house on a curving street, so a cross street or landmark helps. Calls here tend to be driveway no-starts, flat tires, family cars headed to a shop, and now and then a car that gave out on the interstate by the James Road ramps.
Our yard on Harrisburg Pike sits on the opposite side of the city, but I-70 runs between the two, so Berwick is a straight run east past downtown. The dispatcher gives you a live estimate and a full price before sending a truck, and everything rides on a flatbed. Call (614) 633-8163 or use the request form.
Street by street
Where we pick up cars in Berwick
East Livingston Avenue
The north edge, shared with Bexley. A joint road project is planned for the stretch from Alum Creek Trail to James Road later this decade, so expect future lane changes.
South James Road
The eastern boundary, carrying traffic to and from I-70. A frequent place for curbside breakdowns and a staging spot for our trucks.
I-70 at exit 105
Wraps the south and west sides; the exit serves US-33 and James Road. Interstate pickups carry the $75 highway surcharge.
College Avenue
Runs north toward Capital University and past the Jewish Community Center, a common reference point for drivers finding their way in.
Scottwood Road and Berwick Boulevard
The old edges of the golf course; Scottwood also holds Berwick Alternative K-8, where school traffic fills the curbs twice a day.
Berwick landmarks drivers ask about
Roads
- Brookwood Road
Where Berwick began: in 1927 a stone house with gables became the first home built here, at the Brookwood and College Avenue corner. Curb parking is the norm on these older blocks, so tell us whether the car is in a driveway or on the street.
- Haddon Road
A residential street with Bliss Run passing behind the houses on one side. If the car is stuck in a back-yard garage, mention it so the driver brings extra cable for a winch-out.
Landmarks
- Redeemer Lutheran Church
A church on James Road where the Berwick Civic Association has held its monthly meetings. Its lot is a handy meeting point if your car stalls on James.
- Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center
Central Ohio's JCC, on College Avenue, with busy lots for classes and the fitness center.
Parks
- Berwick Park
Four acres of city green tucked among homes, where neighbors hold cultural and learning events.
- Ambos Park
A small park on Kenwick Road taken over by the city in 2024 and named for Emil Ambos.
Schools
- Berwick Alternative K-8
A Columbus City Schools building on Scottwood Road.
- All Saints Academy
Parish K-8 school beside Christ the King Church on East Livingston.
Colleges
- Capital University
Just up College Avenue in Bexley; our Capital University page covers campus calls.
Berwick towing questions
Why does the tow driver need a cross street in Berwick?
Because Berwick's streets follow the outline of a 1930s golf course, many of them curve and loop, and house numbers do not always run the way a driver expects. Map apps sometimes route trucks to the wrong side of a loop. A cross street, a nearby school or park, or a description of the house helps the driver find you on the first pass instead of circling the block.
Can a flatbed load my car in my driveway?
In most Berwick homes, yes. The neighborhood's postwar houses usually have driveways wide enough for a flatbed to back up and load the car in place. If the car is inside an attached garage and will not roll, tell us so the driver brings wheel dollies. A steep or curved driveway can matter for low cars, so mention it if your car sits close to the ground.
What if my car quits on I-70 by the James Road interchange?
Coast off at exit 105 if the car will make it; a residential street off James Road is a far calmer place to wait than the interstate shoulder, and city-street pickups skip the $75 highway surcharge. If you are stuck on the freeway, keep your belt on, hazards flashing, and dial 911 if the car blocks a lane. When you reach us, mention whether you were eastbound or westbound and whether the US-33 split is ahead or behind you.
Will the Livingston Avenue project affect towing?
The City of Columbus and Bexley plan to rebuild Livingston Avenue between Alum Creek Trail and James Road, with construction scheduled for 2029 and 2030. Until then, the road works normally. During construction, lane closures will change where our driver can stop, so give the dispatcher the closest open side street if your car breaks down on that stretch, and we will plan the approach around the work zone.
Do you help in the lots at the Jewish Community Center or Bishop Hartley?
Yes. Large lots like those at the JCC on College Avenue and Bishop Hartley High School on Zettler Road see plenty of dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires, especially in winter. Tell us which entrance you came in and roughly where the car is parked. Roadside help is a $75 flat rate, and a tow is quoted before the truck leaves.
Can you tow my car to a shop in Bexley or Whitehall?
Yes. Many Berwick drivers use shops on Main Street in Bexley or in nearby Whitehall. We can deliver the car anywhere you choose, or suggest an independent partner shop that diagnoses and quotes before doing work. If the shop is closed when we arrive, we can leave the car in their after-hours area with permission or keep it at our yard.
What does a tow from Berwick cost?
Berwick is across town from our yard, so the travel portion of the price is larger than for west-side neighborhoods. We charge $4 per mile from Harrisburg Pike to you, $125 to load, then $7 for each mile the car rides with us. Night, weekend and highway surcharges come on top when they apply. The dispatcher adds it all up and quotes one total before the truck rolls. See our rates for the full list.
