Careful Towing on German Village's Brick Streets

Brick paving, parked cars on both curbs and garages tucked behind the houses: a German Village tow takes more planning than most.

German Village is one of the oldest and most carefully kept corners of Columbus. Its brick cottages sit right at the sidewalk, many streets are still paved in brick, and mature trees lean over lanes that were laid out long before anyone imagined a flatbed truck. The neighborhood starts just south of downtown below Livingston Avenue, with I-70 and I-71 cutting along its northern side, and our trucks reach it from Harrisburg Pike by crossing the Scioto near the Brewery District.

Almost nothing about a tow here is routine. Few houses have a driveway, so most cars live on the street, often parked bumper to bumper. Others sit in small garages or parking pads off the alleys, reached by lanes barely wider than the car. Our drivers slow down on the brick, avoid dragging chains or skates across it, and pick a loading spot that keeps the truck out of the way of neighbors trying to get by. When there is no room to back the bed right up to a car, the driver may winch it out of a tight curb spot or alley first and load where the street widens.

Restaurant nights on Third Street and weekend crowds around Schiller Park add their own traffic. Tell the dispatcher the block, the side of the street and anything that might get in the way, such as a delivery van or a narrow alley turn. We quote the full price first, and the driver brings the car wherever you choose. Call (614) 633-8163 or use the request form.

Street by street

Where we pick up cars in German Village

  • South Third Street

The main restaurant and shop strip, with curb parking on both sides. Evening calls here are mostly lockouts and dead batteries; we stop where the lane is widest and walk back to you.

  • East Livingston Avenue

The northern edge, running beside the freeway. It is busier and wider than the village's interior streets, so it is often where our driver stages the flatbed.

  • City Park Avenue and Jaeger Street

Frame Schiller Park on two sides. Weekend events and summer performances in the park fill these curbs.

  • Kossuth, Mohawk and Sycamore streets

Tight residential and restaurant blocks, some still in brick. Expect the driver to ask about parked cars and low branches before pulling in.

  • The alleys behind the houses

Many cars live in small garages off narrow back lanes. We often winch a car out of the alley to the street before loading.

German Village landmarks drivers ask about

Parks

  • Schiller Park

The neighborhood's big park, with a Schiller statue from 1891 and the Umbrella Girl sculpture; its edge streets are where many visitors park.

  • Frank Fetch Park

A small park named for the man who started the German Village Society and the push to restore the area.

Shopping

  • The Book Loft

A rambling bookstore of 32 rooms in buildings from before the Civil War, drawing crowds on Third Street.

  • Schmidt's Sausage Haus

A long-time German restaurant on Kossuth Street, busiest on weekend evenings.

Landmarks

  • St. Mary of the Assumption Church

An 1865 church whose tall steeple, added in 1893, is visible from much of the village.

Schools

  • Stewart Alternative Elementary

A Columbus City Schools building on Stewart Avenue that dates to 1874 and was rebuilt after a 2010 fire.

German Village towing questions

Will a flatbed damage the brick streets in German Village?

We take care not to. Our carriers are light-duty, and drivers avoid spinning tires, dragging chains or setting wheel skates down hard on the brick. When we need to winch a car, we keep the cable off the pavement where we can and use blocks under any equipment that touches the street. If you are worried about a particular spot, such as a loose patch near your house, tell the driver before loading begins.

My car is in a garage off a narrow alley. How do you get it out?

Many German Village garages open onto alleys too tight for a flatbed to turn into. The usual answer is to roll or winch the car out of the garage and down the alley to the street, then load it there. A dead car in park may need a dolly or skates to move it. Tell us how wide the alley is, whether it is brick or gravel, and if any trash bins or posts are in the way.

There is no driveway and the car is parked tight between two others. Can you still tow it?

Usually, yes. Street-parked cars squeezed between neighbors are the most common German Village tow we see. The driver can often pull it straight out with the winch at an angle, or use wheel dollies to slide it sideways from the curb. If one of the cars around it belongs to you or a neighbor who can move it, that makes the job quicker.

Can you help on Third Street during dinner hours?

Yes. Restaurant traffic, delivery trucks and curb parking make Third Street crowded in the evening, but lockouts and dead batteries outside a restaurant are quick jobs for us at the $75 roadside rate. Tell the dispatcher the restaurant or shop you are in front of, and the driver will stop as close as traffic allows. If the car needs a tow, we may load it on a side street.

Do you tow around Schiller Park during events?

We do. Summer performances and weekend gatherings at Schiller Park fill City Park Avenue, Jaeger Street and the blocks nearby. If your car will not start after an event, call with the closest corner and whether you face the park or the houses. Because the streets fill up fast, the driver may need to wait for traffic to clear before loading.

Can you tow my classic or low car out of German Village?

Yes. Every tow is on a flatbed, which is the right way to carry a classic, a sports car or anything with low clearance. On the brick streets, the bumps and crowns can catch a low front lip, so the driver may use ramp extensions. Tell us the make, model and any modifications when you call. See low-profile towing for details.

Do I need to be there when you pick up the car?

It helps, especially in German Village where finding the right car on a crowded block can be hard. If you cannot be there, we can arrange a pickup with the keys left in a safe spot and the car described clearly, as long as we can confirm you own it. The dispatcher will explain what we need. Payment can be made online, with a 3% card fee.

How much does a tow from German Village cost?

German Village is a short drive from our yard across the Scioto, so the trip-out portion stays modest. You pay $4 per mile to reach you, $125 to load, and $7 per mile while the car is on the truck, plus any surcharge for nights, weekends or extra winching. Winch work is billed at $150 an hour. The dispatcher gives you the full figure before sending a truck.
